The Volkswagen Golf is like that dependable friend you've known forever – always there when you need it, and a true crowd-pleaser where it counts. It has the perfect blend of sugar, spice, and everything nice, making it still one of the most desirable hatchbacks on the market today.

Now in its eighth incarnation, it's no surprise that this hatchback has a dedicated global fan base. But, due to the ever-fluctuating COE (Certificate of Entitlement), local Golf prices have been thrown a curveball, making it a bit of a tougher sell.

The good folks at Volkswagen saw this, and decided to roll out variants that could slide under the more affordable Cat A COE category. We were first introduced to the Golf Life and Life Plus, and now their more attractive sibling has made their way onto the stage. Cue the R-Line.

Category A COE cars are all the rage these days in Singapore. With soaring petrol prices and astronomical COE premiums, these wallet-friendly city runabouts are just the sort of thing a budget-conscious buyer wants - practical, fuel-efficient, and versatile.

For those of you reading outside of Singapore, here’s how we classify Cat A vehicles being registered here:

- Non-fully electric cars with engines up to 1,600cc and Maximum Power Output up to 97kW (130bhp).

- Fully electric cars with Maximum Power Output of up to 110kW (147bhp).

However, as we can see from the figures above, in traditional cases owning a Cat A vehicle means sacrificing performance and oftentimes driving fun in exchange for a cheaper set of wheels.

But, with the advent and advancement in new engine technology alongside innovations like electrical assistance, engine capacity is no longer the defacto indicator of performance.

As has been well-documented in countless other BMW reviews though, that drivetrain layout which gives the 1-series its entertaining handling also leads to its biggest shortfall: interior space. Now, the new 1-series is not a cramped car. Unlike the first generation model, this new car is actually adequately spacious; the relatively large rear windows let in enough light to repel any claustrophobic feelings, and legroom is just about sufficient for two six-footers to sit in tandem. But compared to practically all its front-drive rivals, the 1-series doesn’t offer any surplus room to stretch out, and the transmission tunnel that runs down the middle of the car robs rear passengers of even more foot space.
